On Saturday 5th August 2006 the Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo gave an unforgettable concert in Lancaster Priory.
Oleksiy Kolomoiets and Igor Sayenko presented a concert including Russian and Ukrainian classical and traditional music as part of their UK charity tour.
They are raising money for the children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Hippokrat is a society of mothers and disabled children in the Chernov region of the Ukraine. It was founded in 1996. Chernigiv is 70km from the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. There are at least 1,000 invalid children in Chernigiv which has a total population of 350,000 and those children, unfortunately, get little help from the State. Hippokrat aims to provide the families of the disabled children with food and medicine.
Oleksiy Kolomoiets and Igor Sayenko are both students at the National Music Academy of Ukraine. They both began there in 2001 and have performed together since then, as 'Kyiv Duo Classic'. This doesn't mean that they perform only classical music, but their repertoire includes Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov as well as traditional Ukrainian and Russian music. They have taken part in charity events in Ukraine and Oleksiy has previously performed in Britain raising money in aid of a boarding school in the Kyiv region.
The programme performed in Lancaster Priory was :
'Praeludium in f-moll' by J S Bach
Concerto 'Summer' from the 'Four Seasons' by Antonio Vivaldi
The first movement from 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' by W A Mozart
'Adagio in g-moll' by T Albinoni
'Libertango' by A Piazzolla
'Spring Voices Valse' by J Strauss
The second and third movements from 'Russian Suite' by A Timoshenko, and
'Rassipuha' (Russian dances) by V Gridin.
They also performed an encore including 'Nimrod' from the 'Enigma Variations' by Elgar, saying that he wasn't well known in Ukraine, but they enjoyed his music, and thought he should be.
The performance on two button accordions (both sides of the instruments are comprised of a series of push buttons, unlike piano accordions which have buttons on one side and miniature piano keys on the other) was both delicate and powerful. It was mostly from memory, which in itself was impressive, but each performer played melody and counter melody simultaneously with one hand, and accompaniment or counter melody with the other, giving an effect of a full orchestration where appropriate. At other times a quiet, haunting sound hung in the still evening air enhanced by the atmosphere of Lancaster Priory. Both speed and accuracy of fingering by each performer were incredible. Altogether an unexpected quality of performance from instruments normally associated with folk and popular rather than traditional classical music.
Highly recommended.
